Mission
Terrible Infant creates idiosyncratic new and emerging media projects expressing the voices and vision of its members, with a focus on exploring and experimenting with emerging technologies, formats, and distribution methods. Terrible Infant is a collective, analogous to a theater troupe, composed of several core members and many frequent collaborators.
Terrible Infant engages form beyond narrative and character – we are as invested in what form can be as we are in how it can tell stories. As much as we strive to create a meaningful connection for viewers through narrative and character, we are interested in the limitless potential of new and emerging media, and how those forms can be shaped before they calcify into traditional, tired models that exist solely to monetize content. The collective strives to find a middle ground between existing as a successful entity in late capitalism and grasping at some modern equivalent of the Romantic sublime.
Terrible Infant is invested in local culture. The homogenization of media based on its own influence has led to a severe lack of honest representation of regionality and localized cultures. We believe in using easily accessible tools such as smartphones, computers, and the web to divest power from centralized media hubs and reinvest it in people around the United States and world who strive to honestly portray life for real people as it is lived in real places.
Terrible Infant believes one of the great responsibilities of film and photography as mediums is the preservation of time, place, and culture in perpetual transition. We hope to create an easily replicated model and establish bases around the globe from which local filmmakers can launch their voices.
Terrible Infant aims to both explore and preserve cultures beloved by its members, while contributing to these cultures. For example, with Hong Kong Cinema Appreciation Society we aim to contribute to the scholarship on Hong Kong cinema in English, while preserving and documenting important ephemera from the history of HK cinema using Youtube, Facebook, Instagram, and other platforms for noscripted film content. Through our scripted content, and on similar platforms, we hope to make positive contributions to this culture.
